Dublin v Wexford

Wexford 1-16  Dublin 0-9

Wexford may have been through to the knockout stages but with places up for grabs, there was plenty for each player to fight for in this final game of the championship round-robin.  And Dublin made them compete.

It was a heartening display by Dublin who have taken several knocks along the way but the team spirit remains strong and the road will turn.

Defensively Dublin were very composed.  A tremendous amount of blocking and hooking was put in by all six backs with Grainne Quinn, Tara Corrigan and Elaine O'Meara particularly prominent.  Fiona Hayes more than held her own at centre back against the formidable Una Leacy while Catriona Power and Danielle Smith were tenacious and clever in what they did.  In goals Clodagh Bolger was very composed and her puckouts were well placed.

Dublin spilled a few balls that should have been cleared and Wexford notched at least three points from these mistakes.  Apart from these - Wexford had to rely on four pointed frees by Ursula Jacob for 50% of their first hall tally of 8 points.

Playing into the breeze Dublin did very well to garner two points from Ali Maguire and Ciara Durkan.  Ali added a second before the break to leave just five points between the sides following excellent support play by Miriam Twomey and Ciara Durkan.  Wexford had to clear a ball off the line to deny Dublin a goal - a score which would have  proven a huge lift.

Ali Maguire cut the lead to 4 points with her third score a minute into the second half but Wexford responded well with scores from Michelle O'Leary and Ursula Jacob.  Sarah Ryan was proving a handful at centre forward and converted a free in the 40th minute but Dublin needed a goal.  Sarah Ryan was pulled back by the referee for a free when maybe an advantage might have been played but the free cut the lead to 6 points.

A Wexford goal looked certain in the 48th minute but Clodagh Bolger made a brilliant save but two minutes later a lob from 35m slipped inside the posts that was cruel luck on Dublin.  The fickleness of fate was further revealed in the 57the minute when Wexford 'keeper Mags D'Arcy advanced to catch a high ball but the ball spun from her grasp and to Dublin's display went on the wrong side of the posts.

Louise O'Hara closed the game from a Dublin perspective with two good scores as Wexford held on for a deserved win.
