Dublin v Westmeath

The Dublin U16B squad continued where they left off from the Laois game today in taking on Westmeath in the second round of the Leinster Championship.

On the same DCU pitch that their A counterparts had earlier beaten Offaly, the Dublin Bs made most of the fast pitch and were too fit and athletic for the Westmeath girls.

In the early stages, an initially impressive looking Westmeath half-forward line looked like they might do some damage but Kate Clarke, Emma Gray and Niamh Heffernan (Player of the Match) worked out the threat and shut down the danger.

The full back line of Saoirse Fitzgerald, Aisling Gargan and Ciara Byrne were rock solid while Georgia Plowman in goal, making one fantastic save in the first half and fielding a ball from just under her crossbar, under pressure, in the second half, looks like a real prospect.

Sarah Meagher was joined in the middle this week by Jess Murphy and both brought power and pace that was too much for their opponents.

Claire McGowan had already gotten the scoring going with a point from play before adding a further 3 points from placed balls but the most important move of the first half was a ball struck low and hard across the field which was met by the wonderful Sinead Stack, at pace, and was slammed first touch to the back of the net. Sinead added another point from play, Sadhbh Duffy turned well and buried a goal chance and Ciara Murray pitched in with a well struck point also to leave Dublin up by 2-8 to 0-1 at half time.

Dublin were in a position to add five substitutes early in the second half, knowing that those coming in are just as good as those that started.
Super-sub Jade Sullivan, won a ball wide out on the sideline and fired a ball in to one of the other subs, Lauren Goonan, who added to the scores with a powerfully struck goal while Amy Keegan maintained the midfield dominance. Grace Leach slotted in seamlessly to corner back as did Elle Cullen-Cloake.

Holly Finnegan, always looking dangerous, flashed a ball to the Westmeath net and put another over the bar. The scores just kept coming with a pair for both Sadhbh Duffy and Sinead Stack and another point from Ciara Murphy pushed Dublin out to a terrific win of 4-14 to 0-1.

Bring on Round 3.
