Dublin v Wexford

Wexford 5-19 Dublin 0-13

The result was emphatic but despite this there was still a good deal of pride and positivity in the performance. Dublin were hit with the late withdrawal of goalkeeper Kate Whyte and we wish her a speedy recovery. Aisling Spillane stepped in and pulled off several fine stops on her senior championship debut. Dublin performed poorly for much of the first half and Wexford notched up a string of easy scores.

By half-time the Slaneysiders led by 3-13 to 0-3 with Ursula Jacob notching 1-6. Dublin did find the range with three fine scores (two from play) from Ali Twomey, Louise O'Hara and Gráinne Quinn.

Although the result was not in doubt at half-time, Dublin responded to the challenge and turned in a fine second half. The unerring free-taking of Ali Twomey sent a signal and Dublin took confidence and heart from these scores. The defence tightened especially along the half-line where Laura Twomey (broken finger nothwithstanding), Mairi Moynihan and Claire Rigney stemmed the flow.

Some excellent scores followed from the tireless running of Orlaith Durkin, the hardworking Áine Fanning and Gráinne Quinn. Dublin coughed up a few more soft scores and were denied a goal thanks to a tremendous Wexford flick.

At the end Dublin notched 13 scores and played with heart and at the end of the day - one has to look at the positives and move on to better days.
