Dublin v Westmeath

Dublin 0-8  Westmeath 0-5

Division 4 champions of 2012 versus the All-Ireland champions.  But the biting cold ensured that this was more of a battle of endurance than great camogie.

Dublin had the edge for most of the game but with scores at a premium one knew that the slightest error in defence could prove ultra costly.

The home side were first off the mark with a Georgina Kelly pointed free after 2 minutes but Westmeath levelled the game for the only time five minutes later through Pamella Greville.

Two more pointed frees from Georgina Kelly stretched Dublin's lead playing into the breeze which was encouraging and when Róisín Collins got the first of her three points in the 14th minute, a powerful statement had been made.

Shauna Duff was imperious at centre back and Siobhan Grimes and Elaine Sherry were able wing commanders.

Dublin could have put this game to bed between the 16th and 19th minutes when two goal chances were not converted but a point from a free by Georgina Kelly for a foul on the busy Laoise Quinn put Dublin 0-5 to 0-2 in front.

Westmeath were playing their first game in the current campaign and gradually improved and closed the half with points from Dina Loughlin and Laura Thompson to trail by 0-5 to 0-4 at the interval.

The breeze did not prove much of an advantage for Dublin in the second half and it took all of 16 minutes to register another score a great point from Róisín Collins.

But when Dublin were unluckily reduced to 14 players, they responded to the challenge in style.   Róisín Collins drove over a rallying point and the defence with Gráinne Free and Gráinne Ryan excelling held firm.  Emma Flanagan displayed some nice touches at wing forward.  Elaine Gallery made an impact when introduced and Stephanie Carthy also did well in the difficult conditions before Georgina Kelly (partnered at midfield by the excellent Emer Maher) sealed victory with her fifth pointed free.

Two wins from two is a fine start to the season in Div 3.
