Dublin v Kilkenny

In Blustery and showery conditions in Athy,  The Stormbirds through Tara O'Flaherty  had the ball in the net after 4 minutes, the perfect start. They say goals win matches and that must have been on Tara's and Aisling O'Leary's minds when they both goaled again in the first 30 minutes.

Kilkenny had no answer and were hanging on when Referee Donal Leahy blew his whistle for half time with the scoreline at 3-3 for the Dubs to 8 points for Kilkenny.

Niamh Byrne was outstanding at fullback once again and Aine and Blaithin cut out any threat from the Kilkenny fullforward line.  Dublin used 3 midfielders and the huge workrate of Leah Mullins from Castleknock, Doireann Mullany and Martha O'Donoghue of Ballyboden gave
Dublin a  very strong hand in helping Dublin maintain most of the possession.

Dublin were against the wind in the 2nd half and when Kilkenny come out they were determined to throw the kitchen sink at Dublin, they knew they needed a goal.

Dublin also knew Kilkenny needed a goal and were determined to hold out. The half back line of  Hannah Hegarty, Sarah Nagle and team captain Annemarie Courtney stood tall and strong and set the standard for what was required.  Orla Beagan was in sharpshooting form and did a lot of work covering back when Kilkenny threatened. Eve Kehoe and Aoife Molloy ran at Kilkenny at
every opportunity and were always a threat.

Dublin were fortunate in the last 5 minutes when a brave Faye McCarthycaught a high ball under pressure when the Kilkenny forwards were bearing down on goal.

At full time Dublin were deserving winners by 2 points on a scoreline of 3-6 to 0-13.

So it's an All-Ireland final against Galway next Sunday. Galway will be favourites as they have already beaten Dublin in the earlier rounds and Galway were comprehensive winners over a good Cork side in their Semi Final.

Its 30 Years since Dublin won the U16 title.
