Dublin v Kilkenny

Kilkenny 4-10  Dublin 1-12

Goals win matches is the predictable verdict on this game and in corner forward Rachel Hogan Kilkenny has a gem of a forward with an eye for the net.  Sister of intercounty hurlers Richie and Paddy, Rachel bagged 3-2 of Kilkenny's tally and broke Dublin's resistence in a fine game.

Dublin can take many positives from the game including an impressive 1-9 from play and had they a finisher of Hogan's ability then the Leinster crown could well be resting on Liffeyside.  Dublin had three goal chances in general play and a penalty at the death but none yielded a green flag.

The Cats struck early with Rachel Hogan's first after 2 minutes - a goal that should have been better defended.  But Dublin rallied and inspired by the hard-working Ciara Berkeley, Claire Rigney and full-back Róisín Collins more than matched their opponents.  Playing into the breeze Dublin had first half points from Gráinne Smyth, Ciara Berkeley (45 and a free), an excellent effort from Jane Tully and a driving point by Aoife Kelly to trail by 2-5 to 0-5 at the break.  Rachel Hogan netting from close range in the 29th minute.

Kate Whyte brought off a brilliant stop in each half - the first when she appeared to throw her hurley at the ball and the second denied Hogan her first attempt at a hat-trick.

From an inspiring clearance by Róisín Collins, Jane Tully worked extremely hard to win possession and clip over a neat point in the 35th minute to be followed by another great Aoife Kelly score.

But Dublin were hit again by Rachel Hogan who showed great skill to snatch a first-timed pass and standing all alone she gave Kate Whyte no chance.

Grainne Smyth and Cassie McEvoy showed great fight to reply with points as Cliona McCullagh, Ailbhe Ryan, Siobhan Grimes and Lizzie McSweeney came more into the game.  But a fourth Kilkenny goal proved fatal in the 55th minute.

Dublin had more left and a weaving run by Cassie McEvoy yielded a great goal before Ciara Berkeley pointed in the 59th minute.  Dublin had a penalty with the final puck of the game but the Cats 'keeper stood in the way of another three-pointer.

Kate Whyte, Siobhan Grimes, Róisín Collins, Ailbhe Ryan, Cliona McCullagh, Lizzie McSweeney, Claire Rigney, Cassie McEvoy (1-2), Aoife Kelly (0-2), Ali Twomey, Ciara Berkeley (0-4), Gráinne Smyth (0-2), Jane Tully (0-2), Rachel Flaherty, Claire McDonnell
