Dublin v Wexford

Dublin 3 - 11  Wexford 0 - 8

A snappy early point by Wexford against the breeze pointed to a difficult afternoon but that was deceptive as for most of the game Dublin had the measure of their opponents at the superb Lucan Sarsfields venue.

A cracking goal from the impressive Jane Tully (right) gave Dublin the lead in the 4th minute WEB.JPG Thumbnail0and they were never headed after that.  A minute later Claire McDonnell made a superb fetch and finished clinically off her left side to put Dublin 2-0 to 0-1 in front after 5 minutes.

Wexford battled hard through the middle part of the first half and should have goaled themselves but in the closing 7 minutes of the half Dublin fired over 6 points - three from Jane Tully to just one for Wexford from impressive free-taker Shauna Sinnott.

Dublin led 2-8 to 0-3 at the break and given the way they were playing, it would take more than the breeze to upset the odds.  Wexford did open with the first score but the Dublin defence was outstanding and Kate Whyte did not have a shot to stop in the hour.  Lizzie McSweeney was a commanding presence at centre back with great support from Claire Rigney at left back.

Aoife Kelly and Cassie McEvoy were on top at midfield where Wexford's Jackie Quigley showed signs of senior promise.

Up front Dublin's Ciara Berkeley worked very hard and notched the home side's first score of the half in the 40th minute.  Victory was sealed in the 49th minute when Claire McDonnell notched her second goal just before Aoife Kelly drove over an inspirational long range effort.

Wexford kept up the pressure but Dublin kept the margin and the likes of Ali Twomey, Grainne Smyth and Ailbhe Ryan led the way.
