Wexford v Dublin

Wexford 2 - 11  Dublin 1 - 3

The home side fresh from their double league wins in the National League last Saturday were too sharp for a Dublin side that battled but were unable to penetrate a solid Wexford rearguard.

Within a minute of the start of the game at the excellent Ferns venue, the home side were a goal and a point up - the goal coming from lively half forward Josie Dwyer.

Dublin had to wait 13 minutes for their first score - a Niamh Taylor free but by then Wexford had added three points - two of them coming from midfielders Kate Kelly and Caroline Murphy.

Dublin exerted strong pressure for a spell of about 7 or 8 minutes in the closing stages of half with Anne Griffin, Laura Twomey, Rachel Costello, Andrea Fitzpatrick adn Rachel Ruddy defending well.   But that pressure needed to be rewarded with scores and Dublin could only add a point from Joeleen Hoary.

Wexford regained control and following a neat Ursula Jacob point, Josie Dwyer grabbed her second goal in the 26th minute.  Louise O'Hara drove over a fine point before the break to leave Dublin trailing at the interval 2 - 8 to 0 - 3.

The visitors had the aid of the breeze in the second half but try as they did they could not break down a superb Wexford defence where Michelle O'Leary, Deirdre Codd and Aine Codd were in command.  Eimear Brannigan got some useful pitch time after a long term injury and Tara Corrigan and Anne Marie McCluskey made their first appearances of the season.

Dublin lacked a real presence in the attack and it took all of 26 minutes to record their only score of the half - a fine goal from Ciara Lucey who had switched from full-back to full-forward late in the game.
