Under 14 Cork Blitz

(05 Jun 2018)

Having had a reasonably successful Leinster blitz in late May, the target for the Division 1 team was to reach the semi-final and take it from there.
In the group stages Dublin beat Wexford in the opening game, which was our second successive defeat of this Wexford team, although it was a very competitive and close match that could have gone either way.
We followed the Wexford win with another victory, this time beating Tipperary in a match that saw our forwards click nicely. A couple of goals in the opening half left a gap that was just too large for Tipp to overcome.
In our third match we were beaten by Cork, which was a little disappointing, but nonetheless we were through to the quarter final where we faced a very strong and tough Limerick team. It was the first time we had come up against Limerick and we caught them by surprise in the first half with a couple of quick goals and a point or two which gave us an advantage going into the second half. Limerick came back strongly and managed to get to within 2 points of us, but we held out and made it through to the semi-final.

In the semi-final Tipp turned the tables on us and eventually ended our involvement in the blitz by winning the match with 3 points to spare, so they are now in our sights for the next tournament.

For the Division 2 team, there was a marked improvement over the performance in the Leinster blitz. In the first game the team outclassed Cork with an impressive display, but a narrow defeat to Galway in the 2nd game left us losing out on a place in the semi-final on points difference. So the next step took us into the semi-final of the plate competition where the opponents were a Laois team which had beaten us well in the Leinster blitz. We put in a great performance and turned the tables on Laois, ultimately inflicting a 4 point defeat on them, which was a great psychological boost for the whole team. We went into the plate final with confidence high against a strong Clare team, and with the lead changing hands on a couple of times the game was very tight. However two quick goals in the final couple of minutes gave us an unassailable lead and the girls ended the day on a high by winning the plate.

We look forward to the next blitz which is in Dublin on 8th July.
