True Blues-Monday Feb 26th at 9.30pm on Eir Sport

(20 Feb 2018)

This documentary by  Marmalade Films should not be missed.

The story of the true underdogs of GAA the Dublin Senior Camogie team.

True Blues tells the story of Dublin GAA’s perennial underdogs, the senior camogie team. While the men’s football team, the hurling team and the ladies football team have all tasted success in recent years, the Dublin senior camogie team has endured 33 seasons without a trophy.

Sarah O’Donovan, a 2 time All-Ireland winner with Cork, joined the Dublin set up in 2015 at a point when the team was at it’s lowest ebb. She recalls the attitude to the team in the county at the time. ”When I moved to Dublin, nobody wanted to play senior, it was seen as a poisoned chalice. That was the first thing that had to change”

The intervening years have seen them close the gap on the top flight but following the retirement of several senior players at the end of the 2016 season, Dublin stood at a major crossroads in their development. The arrival of 13 young new players and an ambitious new manager in 5-time All- Ireland winning Kilkenny goalkeeper David Herity is the starting point for this fly on the wall doc with unrestricted access to all aspects of the team; from the inner sanctum of the dressing room and the training paddock to the personal lives and challenges of the players.

True Blues follows the Dublin Camogie team through their 2017 championship season transcending the clichés of female sport to bring the audience on the journey with the team, experiencing the challenges facing any modern GAA athlete. From seasoned veterans to championship debutants, True Blues is driven by the personal experiences of a core group of players and the challenges of the team; balancing work and life commitments; the pressures of competing at the highest level; the threat of career ending injuries; mental health and life after sport are some of the challenges facing individual players.

True Blues is an intimate, coming-of-age underdog story filled with the natural jeopardy of personal and sporting challenges. In True Blues we follow an under estimated group of elite amateur athletes as they toil far from the crowds and limelight of Croke Park to shed the mantle of underdog and achieve the success their determination, dedication and perseverance will bring them.

True Blues is directed by Vincent McEntee (Endure) and produced by Daniel Hegarty, Marmalade Films (Hey Ronnie Reagan, Waterlilies) for eir Sport with funding from the BAI Sound & Vision III funding scheme. The filmmakers and featured players are available for interview. Please contact:
