Offaly prove the masters in Birr

(15 May 2016)

Offaly opened the scoring in this Leinster semi-final with a pointed free from captain Micheala Markan, Offaly's most impressive player on the day. 2 pointed frees from centre back Ali Maguire gave Dublin the lead after 7 minutes. Sadly that was the only time that Dublin were in front. Over the next 15 minutes Offaly scored 6 unswered points to lay the foundation of their convincing win. 2 more pointed frees from Ali Maguire had reduced the lead to just 4 points with 5 minutes remaining. But an Offaly along range free just before half time ended up in the back of the Dublin net giving them a significant lead at the break. Half time score Dublin 0-04 Offaly 1-09

Just like the start of the first half Michaela Markan sent over another pointed free 2 minutes after the restart. Dublin had regrouped at half time and were getting to the pace of the game. A keeper error on ten minutes gave Offaly a 2-10 to 0-04 commanding lead. Dublin to their credit did not give up but responded well to this challenge with scores from Orla Beagan (0-2 frees, Ali Maguire 0-1 free and substitutes Grainne Quinn 0-1 and Sile Ní Coitir 1-1. However Offaly ran out deserving winners Dublin 1-09 Offaly 3-13.

Offaly now play Wexford in the final on 5th May.

Management will worry about this performance. There will be a lot of soul searching in the run up to the championship! The team had prepared well. Everyone was eager to do well. The conditions were perfect. But too many of Dublin's starting 15 didn't get to the pace of the game. It was noticable in the first half the number of times the Dublin half forward line failed to keep or use possession where the Offaly half backs were dominant. This resulted in very little ball going into the inside line and it also allowed Offaly to put fierce pressure on the Dublin backs. The 2 fortuitous Offaly goals either side of half time made Dublin's task that much harder. Positional changes and the introduction of substitutes improved the situation after the break. Substitute Sile Ní Coitir looked the most dangerous of the forwards near goals. But Offaly were the better team on the day and fully deserved their win.
