Minor As show resolve against Wexford

(24 Aug 2015)

The game was played in very poor conditions in Parnells Coolock.

The Dublin girls were on a mission to recover from two disappointing results in previous matches against Kilkenny and Offaly.

The team was re-shaped for this game against Wexford, with Megan Lewis being positioned at Full-back, a new midfield pairing of Ellen McGovern and Grace O’Shea, and a fresh positioning for Ciara Glynn at centre forward as well as Amy Conroy at full forward.

The game was very tight for most of the first half, but Wexford scored 2 quick goals towards the midway point of the half and pulled ahead of Dublin. There was a lot of dramatic goalmouth action around the Dublin goal and at one stage Emma Loo bravely put her body on the line to prevent Wexford pulling further ahead and kept the Dubs in the game. Shortly afterwards, just as the half was drawing to a close Amy Conroy pounced on a breaking ball and broke through to score a goal which brought the team right back into the game.

The second half was a real battle from start to finish. There was magnificent effort from both teams and the scores were more or less even for most of the half. It looked like Wexford had pulled it out of the bag when they scored a free with 1 minute remaining but once again the Dubs dug deep and won the puckout and poured everything they had into the final attack. The referee awarded them a free after a tough challenge close to goal and with Ellen McGovern slotting the ball easily over the bar that was to be the last of the action and Dublin had drawn the game.

The reaction from the team afterwards was that they were pleased at the spirit displayed by the players who were aware that they needed to restore some lost pride in previous matches. The game will be played all over again when the two sides meet in the Shield final in September.
