Dublin Inters into relegation battle

(25 Mar 2019)

Dublin Intermediate Camogie V Derry

The U16’s finished up with a good win against Offaly and the inters were up next to take on
Derry in their final group game where a win would mean avoiding a relegation play off.

Dublin started out strong exchanging points with Derry but with a number of frees going
Derry’s way around the middle third of the pitch, one free was lobbed into the square and
Mary Hegarty pulled on it into the back of the net after 18 minutes. This put Dublin 0-1, Derry
1-2 but the game remained tightly fought all over the pitch.
The Dublin defence was working hard and wouldn’t let anything through making it tough for
Derry to get scores on the board, all of them coming either directly or indirectly from frees.
Good clearances from Sinead Murphy and Shauna McBride were making it to the Dublin
forwards who struggled to break through a crowded Derry half back line and score at the
other end. Aoibhe Dillon then popped one over and slotted over a free. Dublin going in at the
break 4 points down, Dublin 0-3 Derry 1-4.

Dublin came out stronger in the 2nd half and were on top of Derry but only managed 1 point
from a free despite many chances in the opening minutes. Then another goal from Derry
after a nice piece of play that seemed to open up the defence set Dublin 6 points behind.
Dublin responded well to this with points from Sinead Wylde and Aoife Whelan bring the
difference back to 5. Dubin 0-6, Derry 2-5.

Derry then got on a bit of a roll with 15 minutes left in the half. Dublin brought on Emma
Quinn, Zoe Couch and Laura Walsh in place of Ciara Buchannan, Lucy O’Connor and
Emma Johnson in an effort to break Derrys momentum, but it made little difference as Derry
popped 3 more over putting 8 points between the sides. Dublin had some nice moves going
forward in this time but got turned over trying to overplay the ball a bit. A lovely piece of play
from Dublin finishing with a Grainne Power score ended this scoring spree but Dublin failed
to build on this and let 2 more points against them with the final score Dublin 0-7 Derry 2-10.
Dublin scorers
Aoibhe Dillon 0-4 (3f), Aoife Whelan 0-1, Sinead Wylde 0-1, Grainne Power 0-1.
