Certificate in Sports Administration - An Cumann Camógaíochta

 

The Camogie Association (An Cumann Camógaíochta) is an independent voluntary sporting organisation, established in 1904. It is one of the oldest women’s sporting organizations in the country and has a rich and wonderful history.

 

The Camogie Association current strategic plan “Camogie – Our Game Our Passion” has five objectives:

            1. Growing Participation

            2. Improving Performance

            3. Volunteer Development and Leadership

            4. Enhancing Camogie’s Profile

            5. Excellent Governance and Organisational Development

 

AIT are offering a Level 6 single subject module HETAC award of ‘Certificate in Sports Administration’, for volunteer members of  An Cumann Camógaíochta in order to assist the achievement of the organisations goals and assist  volunteer member perform their responsibilities in an efficient and effective manner. The programme is designed to develop awareness of the necessary skills involved in organising and administering an association or club.

 

This module has been developed in partnership with An Cumann Camógaíochta to develop awareness of the basic skills required to facilitate club and organization growth.  One of the main objectives is to help administrators to lead and develop good practice within their club/ association.

 

Participation on the programme will also be an ideal opportunity to network and meet other people involved in developing Camogie.

Aim of Programme

 

The aim of this module is to introduce the participants to the principles and practice of administering a sports club, with particular reference to facilitating the development of An Cumann Camógaíochta

 

During  this programme, participants will;

 

·        Identify the theories and concepts associated with leading and managing people

·        Understand how successful basic financial management skills can contribute to increased association/ club effectiveness

·        Understand the role that communication plays in an association/club

·        Demonstrate how successful planning skills can contribute to increased association /club effectiveness

·        Illustrate the role that exercise and fitness plays in a sports  association /club

·        Identify the legislation and policies/procedures associated with ethics and legal issues in a sports association /club

·        Produce a development plan for own association /club.

·        Relate own experience of leading people to academic learning

 

Programme Syllabus

 

Programme Syllabus will include:

 

- Introduction to Leadership / Management which includes

  • Introduction to Management
  • Development of Management/ Leadership/ Motivation Capacity
  • Management Functions including planning, organizing, communicating etc
  • Event Management
  • Planning and Measurement of Performance
  • Developing the Organisation

 

-  Introduction to Financial Management

-  Introduction to Exercise and Fitness Management

-  Introduction to Ethics and Legal Issues in Sports Administration

-  Introduction to Training and Methods of Instruction Skills

 

 

Assignments will involve reflection on current practice within their club / association and the development of a plan to implement improvements to current practice. Group presentation will encourage interaction, networking and development of team working skills.  Throughout the programme, members of An Cumann Camógaíochta will be invited to relate learning to their organisational goals.

 

Participants will also be introduced to Training and Instruction skills which will facilitate development of adult volunteers and achievement of club / association goals in the future.

 

Cost

The fee for this programme is €300.

 

Programme Delivery

The programme will be delivered over ten evenings commencing on Wednesday 6 October 2010 and continue until mid January 2011. Appropriate breaks will be taken during Autumn mid term and Christmas. Lectures from 7pm – 10 pm will take place on campus in Athlone Institute of Technology, and some blended learning will be delivered through IT systems, thereby providing appropriate student access to library and on campus facilities. Group presentations and assessments will take place on Saturday, 15 January
