Tara Camogie Club, London - News

(22 May 2010)

The 7s were a great success with 14 teams entered in both Junior and Senior competitions.  Visitors from Ireland included Shannon Rovers (Tipperary) and Killimor (Galway) who entered two teams.  Liverpool University, Erin go Bragh of Birmingham and all London clubs also competed.

The Getjar Senior Cup was taken back to Tipperary after Shannon Rovers beat hosts Tara in a gripping final.  Tara were ahead at half time thanks to some solid defending and well taken scores.   Things changed quickly in the second half though. Two quick goals and a point for Shannon Rovers meant that the game was wide open again. Despite another Tara goal, Rovers kept the pressure on and scored a third.   Shannon Rovers were gaining on Tara and were it not for the heroics of goalkeeper Niamh Dolan would have gone ahead sooner.

Rovers keeper Tess Burke also made her mark on the game and in her confidence at saving penalities, hauled down goalward bound Denise Gilligan in the square and, as she envisaged, saved the resultant penalty. Final score 5-5 to 5-7 to Shannon Rovers.

Our Galway visitors also had extra luggage to take back west to Killimor after winning the Senior Plate which was sponsored by CityJet.

The Junior Cup was won by Erin go Bragh and the Plate by Green Isle.

Senior Championship

Tara, current Senior Champions, continue their winning Championship run.  After a comprehensive victory over Murphys in the first round, Tara had a tougher test  against Croydon last week.  Helen Murphy had an excellent first half teaming up well with Denise Gilligan and Joanne Hamilton and finding the target in most instances.  Caroline Kelly and Anne Digan also faired well for Tara who came away with a 3-12 to 0-2 victory.

Next up is Bros Pearses on Wednesday 26 May at Greenford.  Throw -in 7pm sharp.
