Littlewoods Ireland Division 2 Round 1 League. Dublin v Westmeath at O’Toole PK Dublin. Saturday May 15th 2021
The Dublin Intermediate Camogie Team kicked off their littlewoods, Camogie league Division 2 round 1 game today against the experienced west Meath side.
The question many of us were thinking was , will dublin have the bite to match the experience of Westmeath. They answered that question today with a brilliant team performance overall.
Dublin started on the front foot from a 45 pointed by Ciara Holland ,and three minutes later holland added to her tally with a point from a free.
WestMeath then registered their first score of the game from a free from no 14 Hannah core. Westmeaths midfielders got on top and the supply to their forwards allowed them to round up some more scores in the 11th minute to the 16th minute with the score being 4 point to 2 to west Meath going into the water break.
The water break benefited Dunning’s side as immediately after Ciara Holland pointed a free and a score from play a minute later. This brought the sides level.
Dublin gained control in the defence with Ciara Buchanan (captain) Molly O’Neil and kerrie Milne taking control and where more physical not allowing the west Meath forwards the room to score freely .
Dublin took advantage of this spell with the ever so threateningHolland pouncing on a spilled ball from the westmeath keeper and putting a goal to her name. Dublin took the lead by 2 points going into half time with the score being 1.4 to 5 points to dublin.
West Meath kicked off the 2nd half strong with 2 points from play from Aoife Dougherty and Meath scaly. Dublin stuck to the task with a few fresh legs making their appearance. Aoife heffernan who worked tirelessly was replaced by Anna Sullivan. Another workhouse Meadhbh Hicks was replace by Aoibhe Dillon. When Hard work from the dublin defence and midfielders putting pressure on Westmeath forwards allowed a turnover in the play Which dublin picked up on and a well worked goal opportunity buried by Siobhán kehoe brought dublin 1 point up. (Dub 2-4) (wm 9)
Dublin introduced Christine Shannahan for Lauren Robinson who left everything on the field. Another score from Siobhán kehoe brought Dublin 2points up. Just when dublin had a hold on the game , referee Owen Elliot awarded west Meath a penalty dispatched past experienced keeper Dara Cooke by Sheila McGrath who also added another pointed from a free for Westmeath.
At the 17th and 26th minute of the 2nd half Cara feeney was slotted into the forward line along with Aoife Deegan who was full of running at Westmeath defence. Megan benson was brought on to liven up the dubs.
Dublin pilled on the pressure to close the gap and with a well worked pass that found Siobhán kehoe, she was fouled inside the box . However the referee did not award a penalty and play continued on . This could have been a turning point to give dublin the lead if a penalty was awarded and converted but it wasn’t to be.
Despite marginally losing out to west Meath this afternoon, the Dublin Intermediate team showed hunger, heart and pride. There are plenty of positives to be taken from this panel effort.
