Dublin v Offaly

Saturday 18th August 2018

Venue: Kinnegad, Co Meath

They say you appreciate when you lose an All Ireland and then go to Win it following year.

The Dublin Premier Junior Camogie team put themselves in that exact position as they defeated Offaly today in the All Ireland Semi Final to secure a return to Croke Park on Camogie Finals day on 9tth September this time to play Kerry.

Dublin’s first year in Div 2 stood to them with their work rate and pace against a very good Offaly team that didn’t let you get any uncontested strikes away in the early part of the match. But Dublin got to grips with their game plan and started to pass themselves out of trouble to start setting up attack after attack.

Although Offaly scored the first point free taker Aoibhe Dillon scored her first free shortly after. Both girls repeated this until the 7th minute leaving it 2 points a piece. Cara Dawson and Aoibhe made it 4 – 2 for Dublin before Aoife Bugler was fouled for a penalty.

Dublin were getting into a purple patch now and controlling the game and led 6 – 2 from Aofe Walsh and Dillon again.

Aoife Bugler and Dillon scored two more to make it 8 – 2 at half time.

Dublin were against the wind in the first half and with the puck of Katherine wind assisted Dublin were getting on top but just as Aoibhe Dillon was fouled and Aoife Bugler took a free to rebound off the keeper and Dillon scored the first goal of the game, followed by a point from Dillon leaving it 1-9 to 0-2 but Offaly went up the other end and got a goal of their own and that lifted them and they had the momentum for the next 8 minutes.

But a major turning point was Brooke Whelehan received a red card for a second yellow card offence. This was followed by a great point from Cara Dawson and Aoibhe Dillon again. This lead gave Shane Plowman the chance to bring on the finishers starting with Shauna McBride at half back, Shauna’s immediate impact led to another point from Dawson followed by finisher No 2 Sinead Nolan. Offaly scored another point making it 1-11 to 1-3. But a well-deserved goal from the hard-working Aoife Bugler who started her first championship game after serious injury after last year’s All Ireland Final, Aoife was excellent throughout. Finisher no 3 and 4 Rachael Noctor in the other half back slot and Nadine Murphy, forward, whose immediate impact led her to core a brilliant point.

Another really hard worker all day Laoise Quinn got the third goal and took it really well making it 3-12 to 1-3.

The collective team kept to their game plan but special mentions must go to midfielder Hannoh O’Dea, Aoife Bugler, Emma Barron and Kathryn Kantounia, Aoife Walsh and Cara Dawson for a great days work. Head up hurling is one of the buzz words used for this hard-working team and manager Shane Plowman, selectors Ann Colgan and Willie Braine saw heads up hurling all day and were very proud of the whole panel who now look to reach the steps of the Hogan Stand on Camogie All Ireland Final Day on 9th September.
