Lucan Sarsfields win Dublin U.15 Div 4 Championship

(04 Nov 2018)

REPORT

Lucan co-captain Sarah Brennan won the toss and opted to play against the hill and the wind in the first half. Setanta deservedly beat Lucan by 8 points in the group stage, so the Lucan girls knew they would have to show determination, and in the first 10 minutes of physical exchanges not one of them took a step backwards. With Ella Lacey marking Setanta’s Amy Ni Connor, and Aoibheann Scott picking up breaking ball, Lucan gradually began to take control, driven on from midfield by Leah Dunne. Aoife Breen stormed forward to get the crucial first point and the scores started flowing. At the back Aideen Somers at full back and the consistently excellent Aisling Ni Ruairc in goal kept Setanta to a single point in the first half. By half time Leah had contributed 1-2 to Lucan’s lead of 3-4 to 0-1.

Under pressure again from the restart, Lucan’s half back wall of Kaitlyn Harris, Tara Hollowed and Niamh Doherty ensured little got into the Setanta forwards, and Lucan’s first point of the second half by Leah led to a flurry of scores with the game opening up. Chloe Byrne bulleted home a goal and added a fine point, full forward Jessica Fitzgibbon turned to land a great point, while Aoibheann got some majestic scores from distance. The defence kept their concentration to again limited Setanta’s scoring, and late goals from sub Kate O’Connell and Jessica saw Lucan finish winners 7-12 to 0-2. Co-captains Samantha Flynn and Sarah Brennan lifted the cup to the cheers of the large home support.

While hard to single anyone out in a match where everyone had played so well, Taylor O’Brien of Setanta was deservedly awarded player of the match for her driving performance from the back throughout the 60 minutes. On the Lucan sideline, the consensus on the sideline was that Leah Dunne shaded it as Lucan’s player of the match.
