Féile Five Finals 2015

(12 Apr 2015)
Division 1 Ballyboden St Endas 3-2 Lucan Sarsfields 2-3
Division 2 Naomh Uinsionn 2-1 Ballinteer St Johns 1-0
Division 3 Naomh Peregrine 1-1 Erins Isle 0-1
Division 4 Naomh Bríd 2-1 Lucan Sarsfields 0-2
Division 5 Ballinteer St Johns 1-0 Ballyboden St Endas 0-0

Despite the poor weather, a huge crowd of over 1500 attended the five Féile na nGael finals in O'Toole Park. All were tremendous games with the biggest winning margin just 5 points.  All the runners up will feel that if only a break went their way the game could have been theirs.

Division 1 Ballyboden St Endas 3-2  Lucan Sarsfields 2-3

34 seconds into the Division 1 final, Lucan Sarsfields snatched a tonic start with a goal from Carla Delmar. But they never got the chance to build a platform on that score because within a minute Ballyboden had levelled. A piece of individual brilliance by Hollyn Kennedy who controlled a long delivery in the air with the stick, took possession and made some ground before firing to the net off her left side.

But Lucan never gave up and with Heather Kenny playing soundly at full-back they regained the lead in the 8th minute with a point from a free by captain Aoife Mahon.  Throughout the field Boden were showing well Saoirse Hassett pulled a mighty ball out of the clouds and Faye O'Reilly did superbly in the Lucan goals to deny Hollyn Kennedy another goal.

But Hollyn would not be stopped and when Saoirse Fitzgerald sent a long effort goalwards, the Boden sharpshooter was on hand to first time to the net.  The Firhouse Road girls seemed to have a slight edge in attack with Katie McDonald playing superbly on the wing and Aisling Byrne was also outstanding.  The latter provided a very clever pass in the 16th minute to place Hollyn Kennedy for an excellently worked point.  When Katie McDonald drove over a free on the 20th minute Ballyboden went into the break 2-2 to 1-1 in front.

After 4 games the sod had slowed play down a bit but despite this obstacle both teams showed some tremendous skill.  Chloe O'Connor and Laura Quinn were leading the Lucan charge and in the 25th minute a free from Aoife Mahon cut the gap to just a goal.

Boden maintained their composure exemplified in the 28th minute with a nice piece of combined play between Hollyn Kennedy and Olivia Meagher to clear a dangerous situation.  Two minutes later they earned a close range free that appeared to offer Boden the chance to go back four in front but Katie McDonald's low shot went all the way to the net for a crucial goal.  A fantastic catch by Boden's Hannah Leddy was the response from the puck out but Lucan continued their assault and when the hardworking Laura Quinn was fouled in the box they were awarded a penalty with two minutes of normal time remaining.

However Aoife Mahon's well struck shot was brilliantly saved by Katie McDonald as was the rebound by Ally Ramsden.  With the game in added time, Lucan staged one more rally and a brilliant effort from Laura Quinn was stopped by Ally Ramsden but the ball had just passed the line.

Boden were relieved to hear the final whistle blow from the puck-out as they claimed the club's 10th Dublin Féile na nGael Division 1 crown.

Division 2 Naomh Uinsionn 2-1  Ballinteer St Johns 1-0

Naomh Uinsionn laid the foundation of their win in the first half when they took the early initiative.  A point after three minutes by Claire Clinton (a cousin of former Dublin and St Vincent's player Patricia) put them on the road and the same player added a crucial goal two minutes later.  Lesser teams might have capitulated at this stage but not Ballinteer St Johns and when the gutsy Belen Swords fired home in the 12th minute it brought her side right back into the game.

Ballinteer's Niamh Casey was a constant threat and impressed as did Emma McMahon and Jennifer Andrews. But Vincents had their stars too in the likes of Abby Farrell and Aoife Hayes.  Ballinteer were thrown a lifeline late in the game.  Grace Dent was upended in the box and from the resultant penalty the Marlay Park crew went for goal.  However a brilliant defence held firm and the danger was averted.

A couple of minutes later, Naomh Uinsionn clinched victory when Zara Ryan forced home a goal.   It would be the game's final score and thus a match winner.

Division 3 Naomh Peregrine 1-1  Erins Isle 0-1

Dublin Chair Pat Martin described this game as an “epic” and he was right.  From pillar to post both sides went after the game with huge intensity, bravery and skill and for most of the 40 minutes, it looked like extra time was a certainty.

Both sides had a huge fan base with Erins Isle as usual supporting their team in droves.

The Peregrine twins – Aoife and Niamh Heffernan - were mighty for their team in defence and attack.  For Isles Molly Brown stood out for her skill and her willingness to lead by example.  These are players of whom we will hear more about in the years ahead.

20 titanic minutes on thrilling fare failed to produce s score in the first half but not for the lack of effort as both defences put in tackle after tackle to deny their opponents best efforts.  A 50m spectacular solo run by Amy Deegan earned a free for the Blakestown girls but the stroke fell short. This was the spark that sent Molly Brown on her own 50m run for Isles only to see the final shot skim outside the posts.

Peregrines were handed another free 8 minutes into the second half but Niamh Heffernan’s shot was blocked on the line however before the ball could be fully cleared the same player used her strength and ability to recover possession to point.

The Isles reaction was swift when Molly Brown hammered over a great leveller.

The game seemed destined for extra time especially after Isles keeper Caoimhe O’Toole made another great save but Peregrines had one last assault left.  A lovely centre by Eirinn Kavanagh was heading for the hand of Aoife Heffernan.  She failed to control the ball properly but it fell forward and crept over the line for the winner for Naomh Peregrine.

Division 4  Naomh Bríd 2-1  Lucan Sarsfields 0-3

An Amy Quinn goal a minute and forty-three seconds after the throw in was a tonic for Naomh Bríd in a game that had loads of skill and a thrilling finish.  Despite looking the more dangerous, the Russell Park outfit could not establish their dominance on the scoreboard.

Lucan’s Faye Murphy was a potential match winner and looked the part when she scored a lovely point from play in the 9th minute.

However Zoe Mayne played a captain’s role for Naomh Bríd when she netted her team’s second goal before half-time to give them a 2-0 to 0-1 lead.

Naomh Bríd also have an outstanding player in Deirdre McCarthy and her skill, strength and the length of her deliversies were big plusses.  She added a fine point in the second period and although Faye Murphy grabbed her second Lucan needed a goal.

But green flags were scarce and Sarah Murphy in the Lucan goal did her bit to ensure it stayed that way.

Division 5  Ballinteer St Johns 1-0  Ballyboden St Endas 0-0

These teams had the unenviable task of getting the five games programme off to a start in the worst of the cold and rain but they rose to the challenge nonetheless.

From the outset, the game had the appearance of a low-scoring affair and that’s how it transpired.  The highlight of the first half was a great save by Ruby Collin in the Ballinteer goals.

Boden's Beth O’Neill was the class act on view displaying great footwork and skill but unfortunately most of her excellent work was a good distance from the dangerzone.

With extra-time looking like it would be needed Eve Berry of Ballinteer claimed possession and following a 35m run fired home a spectacular goal – a matchwinner if ever there was one.
