Dublin fell to Tipperary by 14 points in the National League earlier in the season and while victory went to Tipperary in the championship match in Naomh Mearnóg, the margin was substantially reduced. With seconds to go only 6 points separated the teams but a final goal by Tipperary gave them a slightly underserved winning margin of 3 - 12 to 0 - 12.
It was Dublin's best performance for some time and in many respects the more than matched the Munster side.
