Dublin U.16 Team reach Leinster Final

(15 Apr 2019)

The Dublin U16 Camogie Team lined up against their Wexford opponents on a cold blustery afternoon in Coolgreany.  At stake for both teams was a place in the Leinster Championship Final so there was a lot to play for and both teams were up for the challenge.

It was a tentative start and Dublin had the wind at their back for the first half.  After a period of sustained pressure, Dublin scored two points from Ellie Young and Emma Diamond.  On the ninth minute Ellie Young, with an unerring eye and following on from her previous match sailed the sliotar over the bar from a free.

Wexford tried to press in the next few minutes and sent a finely struck shot wide of the post. The Dublin backs were vigilant and provided few opportunities for their opponents, repulsing any attack with passes upfield where the Dublin attack yielded another free from which Ellie Young secured another point.

The next five minutes saw some intense pressure exerted from Dublin with Millie Reid blocking and harrying the Wexford attack with her blistering pace.  With the platform provided by defence and midfield, Ellie Young delivered another point and a goal from play followed by a point from Ellie Kane from the full forward line.

Dublin kept up the pressure with the midfield of captain Lauren Dawson and Niamh Crowley dominating their area of the pitch and providing further opportunity for attack.  Ellie Kane struck two fine points over the bar in this period. Even with a strong wind the passing was sublime with a notable passing sequence from Emma Diamond to Phoebe Shannon and on to Aifric Mangan which she struck over the bar.

In the final minutes of the first half Ellie Young added to her tally with three further points from play. Wexford took their first point in the closing minutes but were denied a goal by an excellent show of defence by the Dublin keeper Laura Grendon

The half time score of 1-12 to 0-1 reflected Dublin’s sustained pressure and dominance in all areas of the pitch.

Wexford came out in the second half with a purpose and an intensity requiring Dublin to show another side of their game by absorbing wave after wave of attack.  This was demonstrated by some fine catches and passes out of defence from Claire Gannon. With the wind now at their back Wexford scored a goal after 2 minutes of play.  Dublin responded with a fine point from Aisling Gannon. Wexford continued to press adding a further two points to their score. Ellie O’Connor came on as substitute for Aifric Mangan.

Dublin again dug deep in this period with staunch tackling resulting in two broken hurls.  Ellie Kane added two more points with Wexford securing a point from a free. After some injury time to one of their players, Wexford struck back with a hand-passed goal.  The intensity of play now saw Dublin and Wexford trade scores with three more points apiece. Ellie Kane adding another two points and Ellie Young firing over a free after a storming run from Aisling Gannon. Substitutes in this period were Sarah Smith and Rachel O’Brien for Grace Murray and Emma Diamond.  Roisin Ni Chathasaigh and Ellie Doran substituted for Phoebe Shannon and Lily Rooney.

At the final whistle the score was Dublin 1-18 to Wexford’s 2-6.  Dublin have earned their place in the Leinster Championship Final.  They are a talented, diverse and continually learning squad which has a dedicated coaching and management team behind them.  Well done all!
