Burgess/Duharra of Tipperary Take Crokes 7s

(09 Sep 2017)

THE 44th kilmacud SE Systems Crokes All-Ireland 7's kicked started the All-Ireland Camogie weekend with wins for 2 Leinster teams and one from Munster reports Máire Uí Scolaí.

The first games began at 10-30 with three venues in use and the finals were all played in Páirc de Búrca where Club Chairman Kevin Foley was on hand to assist Camogie Cathaoirleach Ritan Ní Chonaill with the proceedings.

Burgess/ Duharra of Tipperary were the winners of the Proinsias Ó Crónín Cup when they overcame Gaultír of Waterford 5-7 to 2-2. The Tipperary side got off to a fine start and were 4-3 to 0-1 ahead at the break, however the Waterford side who won the Shield for the first time ever last year fought back in the second half but the Tipperary girls always had the extra edge and ran out worthy winners in the end.

Despite losing the final Gaultír did not go home empty handed as Ciara Jackman was awarded the player of the Tournament. Watching  Burgess/Duharra win was former Tipperary star Sinéad Nealon who had her dad Donie Nealon, the former Tipperary All-Ireland medalist with her.

Like the Cup competition, the Shield and Plate were won by clubs for the very first time. The Sean Flynn Shield went to St. Brigids of Kilkenny who overcame Myshall of Carlow 6-4 to 4-4, while the Plate went to Offaly side Naomh Bríd who defeated Down representatives Kilcoo 4-7 to 2-6.

Well done to the young players from Scoil Thaobh na Coille and Mount Anville Primary school who put on a fine display before the Cup Final.

The winner of the Poc Fada was Joanne Dillon of Rathgarogue/Cushinstown of Wexford.
