Boden go down to Oulart in Leinster Decider

(30 Oct 2011)

Dublin champions Ballyboden St Endas were hit with an early onslaught as Leinster champion Oulart the Ballagh raced into a 2-3 to nil lead after 12 minutes.  It should have been 3-3 but Stacey Kehoe unbelievably missed a goal with an empty net gaping.

But to their credit Boden rallied and for the rest of the game competed well.  The home side fielded 11 All-Ireland senior and intermediate medal winners with Wexford and began in blistering fashion.  Intent on not giving the visitors a platform to mount a challenge, they opened the scoring after 2 minutes with an Ursula Jacob free.  A minute later Stacey Kehoe who did untold damage in the corner forward spot pointed before Una Leacy and Diane Ryan goaled in as many minutes.

A superb save by Sile nic Coitir denied Una Leacy in the 10th minute but Oulart seemed certain to score their third goal in the 12 minute when Stacey Kehoe rounded Sile nic Coitir but amazingly drove wide from about 4m.

Boden reorganised their rearguard with Mairead Luttrell moving to full back and Ciara Lucey temporarily operating as an extra defender.  The move stopped the goal threat and apart from one effort early in the second half, Oulart never threatened the net again.

Ciara Lucey pointed a free in the 16th minute but Oulart hit back immediately with a nice point from Ursula Jacob.  Boden's best score of the game came in the 20th minute when a penetrating run by Ciara Ruddy yielded a rousing point.  However the Wexford girls have loads of talent and Sharon Kehoe and Ursula Jacob added more scores before Ciara Lucey closed the half with a fine pointed free.

Boden needed an early boost after half-time but the Oulart full-back line were outstanding - Ciara Storey at No 3 and the Atkinson sisters Karen and Colleen in the corners.  Natalia Hyland, Fiona Ní Chorcoráin, Anne Griffin and Orla Smith battled bravely but the lighter Boden forwards could not make headway in the heavy conditions.

Sile nic Coiter saved brilliantly from Una Leacy in the 35th minute as Oulart failed to convert the rebound but Ursula Jacob, Una Leacy and Stacey Kehoe continued to torment.  It took Ballyboden 28 minutes of the second half to register a score - an Emer Lucey goal after a free from Anne Griffin was dropped into the box.  Anne Griffin added the final score from a free but by that time the destination of the title was in no doubt.

Oulart Scorers:  Ursula Jacob (0-6,3f), Una Leacy (1-1), Diane Ryan (1-1), Sharon Kehoe (0-1), Stacey Kehoe (0-3)

Ballyboden St Endas Scorers: Emer Lucey (1-0), Ciara Lucey (0-2f), Ciara Ruddy (0-1), Anne Griffin (0-1f)
